Climate Milestone

The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere exceeded 400 parts per million (ppm) on 9th May. It is the new climate milestone on Earth’s way to change.

The last time the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere was so high, was 3 million years ago when seas were at least 30 feet higher and the planet was about 2 to 3 degrees warmer. CO2 concentrations, however, were on their way down then, whereas today they have only begun the rapid climb uphill leading towards an uncertain climate future.

Is Earth in danger? Even if we could somehow stop the CO2 rise tomorrow, the planet’s temperature would still climb for centuries. We have triggered something we are unable to control. Most likely we will not see dramatic change next week or next year but the signs tell that Earth as we know it is going to change.
